Painting in Cairo

In the winter of 1999 I spent a month in Egypt. I was looking for an Orientalist touch as a change. Trying to paint on the streets of Cairo, however, was one of the worst experiences of my life. Crowds gathered around me. I had also experienced this in other countries (Cuba, Dominican Republic), but whereas in the other places the people watched silently, the crowds in Cairo were screaming louder and louder. Maybe they thought if they yelled I would understand. They also touched and moved my canvas, and some kids threw stones at me. I ended up in the hospital with a broken shoulder.
